Platycerium elephantotis, commonly known as the Elephant Ear Staghorn Fern, is a distinctive tropical fern admired for its broad, dramatic fronds and sculptural growth. Unlike the deeply divided fronds of many other Platycerium species, this mature specimen develops large, wide foliage that creates a bold and architectural display for collectors of unusual tropical plants.
Plant Characteristics
Platycerium elephantotis produces two types of fronds: rounded basal shield fronds that help protect the root system and broad fertile fronds that extend outward as the plant matures. The foliage has a soft, slightly textured surface and can develop an impressive size under warm, humid growing conditions.
This species has an epiphytic growth habit and naturally grows attached to trees rather than in traditional soil. Mature plants can develop substantial fronds, making them especially suitable for mounting on wood, cork, or other breathable supports. Its wide, elephant-ear-like foliage gives it a noticeably different appearance from more common staghorn fern varieties.
Care Guide
Provide bright, indirect light and avoid intense midday sun, which may damage the fronds. Water thoroughly when the growing medium or mounting material begins to approach dryness, while allowing good airflow around the roots.
Platycerium elephantotis prefers high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, and temperatures between 65–85°F. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 55°F.
Use a loose, airy medium such as sphagnum moss, orchid bark, coco fiber, or a similar epiphytic mix. Excellent drainage and airflow are essential. Its care level is generally considered moderate.
Why Collectors Love It
Collectors love Platycerium elephantotis for its oversized, broad fronds and highly distinctive form. Its mature size and dramatic tropical appearance make it an exceptional centerpiece for Platycerium collections and indoor tropical displays.
