Hoya sp. ‘Gayo Lues’
Hoya sp. ‘Gayo Lues’ is a rare Indonesian collector Hoya admired for its bold foliage and distinctive tropical character. Originating from the Gayo Lues region of Aceh, Sumatra, this locality-form Hoya stands out with prominent leaf venation, textured surfaces, and attractive silver splash markings that may vary from leaf to leaf.
Plant Characteristics
This uncommon Hoya develops large, thick, deep-green leaves with an oval to elongated shape, raised veins, and a slightly sculpted appearance. Some leaves may display scattered silver or mint-toned splash patterns, creating unique variation on every vine. It has a climbing and trailing growth habit and can be trained on a trellis, allowed to cascade from a hanging pot, or grown along a support. With proper care, its vines can extend several feet indoors, while leaf size and splash intensity may vary depending on maturity, light, and growing conditions.
Care Guide
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun may support compact growth and stronger leaf coloration, but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight.
Water: Water when the upper portion of the growing medium begins to dry. Do not allow the roots to remain constantly wet.
Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%, with good airflow.
Temperature: Keep between 65–85°F (18–29°C) and protect from cold drafts.
Soil: Use a chunky, fast-draining Hoya mix containing orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, and a small amount of moisture-retentive material.
Why Collectors Love It
Collectors value Hoya sp. ‘Gayo Lues’ for its impressive veined leaves, unpredictable splash patterns, and rare Indonesian provenance. Its dramatic foliage makes every mature plant a distinctive centerpiece in a serious Hoya collection.
