Hoya Red Waymaniae (Hoya waymaniae Kloppenb.) is a distinctive collectible Hoya known for its dramatic foliage and beautiful reddish coloration that can become more pronounced under bright growing conditions. Native to Borneo, this tropical epiphytic vine offers a bold combination of ornamental leaves, compact vining growth, and unique color that makes it especially appealing to Hoya collectors.
Plant Characteristics
Hoya waymaniae develops firm, oval-to-elongated foliage with a substantial texture and naturally muted green to olive tones. Under brighter light, the leaves may develop attractive reddish or maroon coloration, while younger foliage can also emerge with deeper red tones. It grows as a small to medium-sized climbing or trailing epiphytic vine and can be trained on a trellis or allowed to cascade from a hanging container.
Care Guide
Provide Hoya Red Waymaniae with bright, indirect light; brighter filtered light can help encourage stronger foliage coloration. Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to partially dry before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.
Maintain moderate to high humidity with good airflow and temperatures around 65–85°F. Use a loose, fast-draining Hoya mix containing materials such as orchid bark, coco chips, perlite, and other airy components. A pot with excellent drainage is essential. This collectible Hoya is best considered a moderate-care tropical houseplant and benefits from consistent warmth and stable growing conditions.
Why Collectors Love It
Collectors appreciate Hoya Red Waymaniae for its unusual reddish foliage, compact vining habit, and changing coloration under different light conditions. Its distinctive appearance makes it especially attractive for collectors seeking ornamental foliage Hoyas beyond the more commonly available varieties.
